Throat Care & Speech Problems

Gainesville Throat Care & Speech Center

There is an old proverb that says, “Speech is a mirror of the soul: as a man speaks, so is he.” Communication is fundamental to the human experience, and is one of the things that make our world so special. Speaking is one of the primary ways you find identity, and how you come to understand others. When communication is made difficult by speech or throat disorders, individuals not only lose their ability to properly converse with others, but to fully understand and be understood.

Accent ENT offers residents of North and Central Florida the best treatments for throat and speech problems.

Here at Accent ENT, our throat and speech specialists strive to serve our patients with expert care and treatment, knowing that we can improve human lives by giving them the opportunity to share in that most basic and elemental of human activities—communication.

Unfortunately, throat diseases and speech disorders are an all too common affliction in both adults and children. Between 1999 and 2010, there was a 76% increase in the number of children admitted to hospitals in the U.K. with acute throat infections like tonsillitis and pharyngitis. Between 6 and 8 million Americans suffer from some form of speech impediment.

Gainesville Throat Care & Speech Center
Have difficulty swallowing? The good news is you are not alone. Difficulty swallowing, or dysphagia, is a problem afflicting over 10 million American adults every year, and can be caused by multiple factors, such as:

Age

The throat muscles lose strength and coordination over time and can make it difficult for normal secretions to pass easily into the stomach. Recent studies have indicated that up to 22% of those over the age of 50 may suffer from dysphagia.

Sleep

Swallowing occurs much less during sleep, and excess secretions may accumulate, resulting in forceful coughing and throat clearing upon waking up.

Stress

Continual stress can tighten the muscles of the throat and cause the feeling of a lump. Clearing the esophagus to get rid of the lump only irritates the throat further.

Swelling

Irregular growths in the throat can appear, restricting the ability to swallow.
